"The Time Traveler's Wife" was a sweet, lovely movie, recommended if you like romances and magic.

The drive was. . . stretching. It does me good to get off my own beaten path every few months. I drove over the pass and beyond by about 15 miles.

Drove back to town, got some "Grilled Shrimp on the Barby" from Outback, then came home.

Early to bed tonight, I think, then two more informational interviews tomorrow.

Today's lesson is to always research the location of a hotel before making reservations.

My retreat lodging turned out to be in the only standard issue small city on the island, which is also the home of a Navy base, complete with fighter jets.

The room was nice enough, but ten minutes after unpacking I knew I couldn't stay. If I was going to be in that kind of neighborhood I might as well have stayed home. And it was far enough from the places I did want to be that it wasn't worth it.

Management very graciously did not charge me the one night's fee I owed contractually.

I stopped at several more hotels on my way back south, but none of them worked out.

So here I am in the ferry line, about to head back to the mainland. I can do the writing and reflection I need to do at home, and do some day trips into the country if I need to get out for a while.

And the Daughter is off with her dad, so I'll still have my alone time.

(And I did complete the one ritual act that needed to be done on the island.)

Golden Day

Yesterday was glorious.
No other word for it.

When [livejournal.com profile] uncrowned_king and I got up on Saturday morning, I realized I felt good for the first time in more than two weeks, and that it was going to be a beautiful day out. We decided to go on an excursion.

After some consideration of the options, we headed for Port Townsend, by way of the Kingston Ferry and a picturesque little dot on the map called Port Gamble. We lunched in Port Townsend, strolled up and down the quaint main street, and came home via the Keystone and Clinton ferries.

As we walked through Port Gamble in the autumn sunshine, scuffing leaves across the sidewalk, I realized I hadn't felt this happy in a very long time.

Driving through the countryside, I also realized that it felt very, very good to get out of the city, out of the office, out of my cave. I don't often feel nurtured by being in nature, but I certainly felt it yesterday, and -- on the subject of longing -- found myself longing to be able to move out to some greener, quieter place.

We got home around 8pm and [livejournal.com profile] uncrowned_king grilled some chicken with garlic and served it over pasta, and we ate dinner off a single plate, and it was perfect.

What happened after that was also glorious.

Today I went clothing shopping with my mother (my personal shopper, without whom I simply do not go out looking for clothes) and we found several perfect outfits at the first place we went to, Talbot's Woman: which is one of the very few places that acknowledges that a woman can be a 'plus' size and still have a 'petite' frame: short waist, short legs, narrow shoulders. I'm wearing new jeans that fit me, and a lovely soft sweater. Now all I need is a new pair of shoes to fit my mis-matched feet.

The only downside to the weekend is that after more than two weeks of feeling awful, my house is a disaster. Once I finish browsing LJ, I have a pile of dishes, mounds of laundry, lots of floor-sweeping and considerable picking-up to do.

But even the prospect of all that housework hardly puts a damper on my mood.
Because it has been a really good weekend.
