I just talked with my dad. The doctor told him that he has to have surgery to remove the tumor on his pituitary gland. The good news is that this isn't - as I had mistakenly been thinking - going to involve "brain surgery."

The pituitary gland is outside the brain.

What's more: this surgery is considered a "routine procedure."

They won't need to open the skull, but will go in through his nasal passages. Recovery is probably 2-3 days in the hospital.

My uncle, who died last year on April 11th, had a brain tumor. After the surgery he was never the same. I'd been worried that the same thing might happen to my dad. It's a tremendous relief to find out this isn't the same kind of procedure.
