As most of you are already aware,
Avon sponsors a series of three-day walks every year to raise money for breast cancer research. I was on their site this afternoon and was surprised by the level of support they offer, not just during the walk but in the training. Already they have orientations, focus groups (for mutual support and information), training walks, personal coaching, and fundraising help available for the women who are walking.
I've decided that I want walk this year. The Northwest's walk will be September 7-9.
My mother and both her sisters are breast cancer survivors, which means that my sister, my daughter, and I are all at risk. Plus, I need a big, meaningful, do-or-die goal to motivate me to commit to a serious improve-my-fitness program. And, as
_storyteller_ observed, I've got a lot of soon-but-not-sure-when transitions coming (moving out, finding a new place to live, changing jobs), and this gives me a very specific set of conditions to prepare for.
I've invited some friends to join me in training and walking. It's going to be a huge adventure -- not just the walk itself, but the process leading up to it. It's been two years since my canyon quest. It's time for another big stretch-my-boundaries undertaking.
There's an orientation in Issaquah on March 27th at 7pm. I plan to be there.
