Snow Stress
Jan. 16th, 2007 06:33 amIt actually felt good to be back at work yesterday and back in the routine -- but the snow is coming down hard again this morning, the DOT is saying "If you can delay your commute, please do," and I have a departmental staff meeting this morning at 9:30am. It's possible that the snow will let up before then and temps start to rise, but I probably shouldn't bank on it.
This situation is stressing me out. I have a 20-mile commute through several micro-climates. The roads are not in great shape. I was working from home two days last week because of snow. My presence is not essential to the business, but my job usually involves a lot of face-to-face interaction. Even if I were to stay at my keyboard all day at home, I still would not feel comfortable charging for all my hours, because my being present is so much a part of my job -- and there's not enough email and reporting to fill the time.
I hate feeling like I look like a slacker or a wuss -- but I also see no need to take chances on our roads right now when I do have PTO I can take to offset the time away.
It wouldn't be so bad today if it wasn't for the staff meeting. I can dial in, but I was supposed to bring some important color copies today because someone else is traveling, and that probably isn't going to happen. Of course, the folks who attend the meeting are capable of making their own copies -- but if that was a preferred option, I wouldn't have a job in the first place.
