What kind of ritual and/or devotions seem to work well? What have you found to be good educational resources? Do you have any stories about your involvement or work with her which you would be willing to share? I plan to do some meditation to connect with her, of course -- but I always like taking the opportunity to learn from those who have greater experience.
In case you're wondering why I'm asking: I was in a spontaneous ritual a week or so ago, and my partner powerfully invoked Freyja. I am of one-quarter Norse and one-quarter Swedish heritage, but have never been drawn to the divinities or practices of that region -- but now I'm feeling drawn to explore Freyja. I've done a little preliminary resarch and was surprised to find resonances between her and Inanna, who has been very important to me in the past.
My own spiritual practice is in a state of flux right now, and I intend to take this sense of invitation to relationship seriously.
Thanks in advance for anything you're willing to share.
Ok, so I tried really hard to write all this down as a comment, but I think it's too big. Here, lemme just send it to you in an email. Email me at runewynd at yahoo.com, and I'll reply you, ok?
If you will ensure that I have your proper email address, I can put you in touch with a friend who knows EVERYTHING there is to know about Norse gods, or at least seems to, to me. Nice nice nice guy, storyteller, very cool.
I have a friend who is dedicated to Her, he's Norse Reconstructionist but not Asatru. Not so much with Her warrior aspect, however, and we've not gotten a lot of chance to talk about it. But if you wanted to email me at saigh at cyberpict.net and give the okay to pass on your email address I could put you in touch.
I reached out to Her, myself, as rather an obvious Goddess from that culture, but She showed no interest in me at all. The only One from that culture who has showed interest is a God...which makes for double weirdness for me as the first non-female Deity who contacted me is also the only non-Gaelic one I worship now. Then I married a Northman and syncretism became the way here.
Thanks for the offer to put me in touch with your friend. I just sent you an email.
I haven't gone very far in my research or meditations yet, but I'm not surprised that you and Freyja didn't connect. As far as I can tell, she's a lover of warriors, not a warrior herself -- and my impression of you is that your focus is being a warrior and connecting with goddesses who are warriors.
I'd love to read more about the details of your spiritual path and how you and your Northman blend/share your practices.
I get the impression from the little research I've done that She definitely fits as a War Goddess...and as a Goddess of a Seer craft, there is a strong similarity between the One I do serve and Herself. But it's occurred to me that as She and The Gray Man get divvies on dead warriors, that They might not share when the warriors are still alive. Even if said warrior is not too convinced about the whole after life thing in that regard. But it's just a theory. Uh, one that I just thought of a few hours ago. ~;)
The simple answer to how we do this is that we are very much following our Highland ancestors...we are Gaels, we just happen to also include two two Norse Gods. With a few other Norse elements. But mostly we're culturally Gaelic. Uh..speaking a modern Germanic language for the most part and constantly trying to learn a modern Gaelic. ~:/ I do hope to write some about this. Again, I've been milling stuff through my head since my drive home from work but have been too tired to really write much more than this sort of thing.
