Bedtime Troubles

For the last week or so, my almost-eight-year-old Little Princess, whose official lights-out time is 8pm, has not been able to fall asleep until after 10pm. Being unable to sleep causes her anxiety, which makes matters worse, and she calls out to me every 10-15 minutes for comfort, reassurance, and a hope that I can magically fix her problem.

Afterthought At first I was disappointed by this result. I wanted to be the heroine! The center of the story, the brave adventurer! Then I realized that the description above is not about a "side-kick" -- it's about the one who has already made the journey, who has achieved a certain degree of wisdom and mastery, and who is now in a position to help others along the path. Just because the Fairy Godmother plays a supporting role in Jack's or Cinderella's story doesn't mean she doesn't have an ongoing story of her own, meeting challenges the fledgling hero or heroine could barely comprehend!
