One of my happy to-do's this weekend was to finally put together a strand for LM, to be used as a focus tool for working with him -- and just as a way of honoring him.

It did not go at all as I planned.

My very first purchase of beads, at the beginning of summer, included a strand of orange-brown horn beads which reminded me of him. I had been planning to use them as the primary or foundational element of his dedicated strand - but in the end, they just didn't work with any other beads I had.

Because one of his most important gifts to me was a hemtatite ring, I tend to use hematite when I connect with him. I have three or four different kinds of hematite beads, including different sizes of rounds, chips, and two styles of hearts. None of them made it into the strand either. Too shiny was the message I kept getting.

The glass tiger eye beads were also too shiny.

I had been envisioning a strand about the size of the friendship beads: something I could slip around my wrist and hold with my fingers.

Nope. I laid out the beads, fiddled with them for a couple of hours (off and on, last night and this morning), changing them, adding new ones, taking them off. . . and finally realized that the structure was just wrong. It was awkward. The only part I really liked was the pendant strand.

Finally I got the message: the pendant strand was enough. He didn't want anything big, fancy, or that might draw attention or get in the way. He wanted a "pocket strand" -- a short length that can safely be slipped into a pocket and carried around.

It took a while longer to work that out: how to anchor it (using a bead I'd tried unsuccessfully to fit into the longer strand), only one heart bead rather than two, realizing I needed to add a spiral bead, replacing the coppery beads with holes that were too small for a doubled wire with something bigger but still the right shade. . . and one incongruous-to-anyone-but-me purple faceted bead just above the pendant itself to whisper of kingship.

It's not at all what I started out with, but I'm happy with it.

It's called "Wolf King In My Pocket"

The anchor bead is bone with stars on the edge.

Now it's time to go tend my altars. . .
