Wolfling just asked me "Was Tolkien's elvish published before Ael [a Romulan character in the Star Trek novel My Enemy, My Ally] was created?"

"Yes, many years," I replied.

"Did you know that in elvish 'Ael' means knight, and [the rest of her name -- or at least a significant part of it] means 'noble'?"

No, I did not know that.

My daughter is comparing Tolkien's elvish and Romulan names.

Her geek-fu far outstrips my own.

I loves my Wolfling.

Love!!!

When I was her age, or scant older, I was composing poetry in Quenya/Tengwar.

My high school English teacher became convinced I was worshiping Satan...

We're very fortunate to be a in place where any teacher who gave Wolfling any idea that they thought that way would get a stern talking-to very quickly. And possibly more than that, if it had an impact on her classroom experience.

Yeah. I lived in an area where over half the population were dancing-in-the-spirit, speaking-in-tongues, rebuking-the-devil Pentecostal Christians. Anything "different" was automatically Satanic.

Wolfling is very lucky to be loved, supported, and even sort-of understood. (No teenager is fully understood. T'is the nature of the beast.)

LOL! My DH at the same age was writing messages in Elvish in people's yearbooks.

Love it! That's the sort of thing I would do, except I would never have thought to look up the name, or any name, in Elvish. I love playing games with names.

Oh, and Re: Wolfling *GLOMP*

I was working at Common Good today and came up behind my friend Joni. I didn't quite *GLOMP!* her but I gave her a big, enthusiastic hug.

I didn't see that she had a cup of coffee in her hand!

OOPSIE!!!

I hang my head now in embarrassment.

Wolfling had to pony up $25 the other day for glomping a friend and breaking the friend's headphones for her cell phone.

I keep trying to explain that she needs to be more careful with her glomps -- but at least she took full responsibility for making amends.
