This from the opening pages of Promethea, a graphic novel by Alan Moore.

A young woman is writing a paper on Promethea, a mysterious literary character who has appeared in a variety of works since the 1700's. After being abruptly dismissed from an interview with the widow of the most recent person to write about Promethea, she finds herself being pursued by a shadowy phantom through the streets of New York. As she runs, she cries aloud, "What did I do? I haven't done anything! I'm a college student! All I ever did was read books! What did I do?"

The phantom trips her. She falls over a railing. And as she hangs suspended above the street, the phantom's demonic face appears in front of hers and replies, Wrong books.

I don't know if this translates well in the re-telling, but it had me laughing out loud.

Maybe you have to be a college student to appreciate it.

you know what's really great? i was a senior in college, working on my senior thesis, which was on representations of apocalypse. one of the works i was treating was the graphic novel watchmen, also by moore. i read a bunch of stuff about the history of comics, and then i felt like a big poser, because here i was writing about comics and i hadn't even ever followed a book month to month! so i headed over to my local comics shop to find something to subscribe to. from across the room i saw the cover of promethea #4. i walked straight to it and bought it. then i scrounged up promethea #1-3 because i hate to start in the middle. and in issue #1, there was a female college student working on her senior thesis, mostly on comics.

(that wasn't the only reason the book spoke right to me, but it's the part that makes the best story! :> )

i love it when stuff like that happens. :> glad you're liking the book.

That is a great story!

I'm about halfway through the book (lunchroom reading), and continue to enjoy it. Not only is the storyline compelling and beautifully-illustrated, the process of becoming a hero/ine is something which always fascinates me.

I am the holy splendor of the imagination. I can not be destroyed.
What a line!
