Looks like our GM du jour, who was supposed to run a Pax Draconis game for my group this coming Saturday, has email problems that prevented his "Sorry, gang but I can't make it that day" email from getting to the rest of us.

Since I've finished my ethics class and have copious free time at work, I'll be putting together a "Swashbuckling Adventures" scenario (originally the 7th Sea game) for Saturday. It will be the fastest I've ever tried to put something together.

It's going to be a one-shot (beginning, middle and end all in one session), set at a fancy party in Castille (Spain), so I'm looking for non-player characters and plot devices appropriate to that setting: purloined letters, thwarted lovers, mistaken identities, and etc. (Think Zorro and the Three Musketeeers for genre conventions.) I want to keep it light, so no heavy politics or murder mysteries. My last game, a confrontation with pirates who had invaded a town under the protection of the PCs' family, got far more dark and upsetting than I had intended.

Lots of plot, lots of fizz -- it should be a fun way to spend the week.

We went to one-shots because we can only meet every 4-6 weeks, and it was tough to remember all the details of what happened from session to session. But we've been missing the satisfaction that comes from longer campaigns, so we're talking about trying longer scenarios again.

That sounds like a job for the Scarlet Pimpernel.

I don't know much about gaming - and that's fine by me - but it does sound like you're going to have some fun!

Gaming is a great recreation for creative adults! It's a lot of fun to create a heroic character and then collaborate in an impromptu storytelling session *as* that character.

I've been a Star Wars princess, an ex pirate captain in command of a Naval spaceship, a shaman aligned with the spirit of Bear, a winged doctor with healing powers, a medieval bard who could cast simple spells and pull a lion out of a pouch, an extremely rich and extremely beautiful playgirl from a noble family who finds herself serving as an interstellar ambassador, and I just created a bounty hunter for Pax Draconis.

To create a character, you find a piece of your own psyche you want to explore or have fun with, dress it up in a costume and props, and send it out to play with colorful slices of your friends psyches. It doesn't have the special effects of a blockbuster movie, but the emotional punch can be as significant (in triumph or tragedy), when everything is really clicking.

Don't forget the obligatory Spanish speaking Catholic Irish "Wild Geese" Officer in the Spanish Military....tons of them were in the Army, Cavalry, and Navy. Could add some flavor.

Interesting concept. I'm not sure how that will work with Theahan nations, but I'll put it on my list.
