As I mentioned in my last entry, the 'job' I have now continues to consist almost entirely of free time in front of a computer terminal. This is an extrordinary opportunity to write.

But I'm finding that after a complicated romantic/creative burn-out last year, too much web-surfing, and general life pressures, my muse has taken hirself off on a long vacation. What I produce when I try to do some creative writing (stories or essays) ends up boring even myself.

If you are reading this, odds are good I'm on your Friends list. If I'm on your Friends list, I'm assuming it's because when you first visited my journal you found something intriguing or entertaining here. If you're still here - and most of you have been reading me for at least a few months now - it's because my thoughts and words continue to be of interest.

So my shamelessly fishing question of the morning is two-fold: 1) Why am I on your Friends list? What do you get out of reading my journal? and 2) If you were the editor of a magazine covering one of our mutual interests and you needed an article or essay piece, what would you ask me to write about for your readers?

I need some help priming the pump!

Thanks in advance!

1) I believe I stumbled across you via [livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna. Your eloquence hooked me, as did the variety of topics you discuss here. Our mutual geek-love just keeps me coming back for more ;)

2)I'd say the role of women or feminisim or both in either myth, literature or religion.

Any help? (and would you mind returning the favour? you've got me curious!)

1) Thanks for the compliments, Lady V! And it's been fun to find so much geek-love here. I'd gotten used to concealing my Trek-love in my everyday life, so it's fun to let that come out.

2) the role of women or feminisim or both in either myth, literature or religion. That's a pretty darn big area. I'll see what I can do. If a slightly more narrow topic occurs to you, I'd be interested.

I'm also interested in your women in Sci-Fi paper. Care to provide a preview?

I forget how I found you. It was either as the result of an interests search (possibly on "Guinevere") or I found you via your comments on [livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna's journal. We don't have any friends in common (although looking at your Communities list just now I may browse a few of them).

I read you for the same reasons you indicate you read mine: I love the way you write, what you have to say, and your unabashed geek-ness.

As for what I would be interested in having you write more about: I'm still intrigued by your interest in Deanna Troi, and would like to read either some fic you've written (slash or not) and/or some reflections about what draws you to her and/or what you think gets lost or overlooked in the canon material.

I think you might like this then. It's possibly one of the stories I had most fun writing.

I liked this very much!

It did give me a new perspective on Deanna.
Of course she would get tired of being stuck in those outfits, of having her looks and her empathic talents blind the crew members (especially the males) from truly seeing her for the formidable individual she is.

I especially liked your portrayal of her pleasure in being physically dangerous. (As a woman of small stature and intellectual inclinations, that's often a part of my own fantasies. . . .)

You're not too fond of Will, it seems.

He's a fun plot device. The imzadi thing is handy, because it gives me another level of their relationship to work with. I actually do quite like him, he's a great character. And if he weren't such a Grade A S.O.B, I wouldn't have have as much fun trashing him ;)

I actually have another idea floating around, based on the same holoprogram, but I don't know if I'll use it. I'm just considering the implications of Deanna effectively dressed in drag (with the implication that she does this often) in an episode meant to hint at a possible future relationship with Worf...

Do you favor a particular "happily ever after" resolution with one romantic partner for Deanna, or do you prefer to leave her options - and yours - open?

Options open. I can't do happily ever after, I'm allergic to it. In life as well as fiction, for that matter...It's the same with writing Beverly, although my version of the good doctor is so chock full of angst happily ever just ain't happening...

I've become a bit allergic to Happily Ever After myself.

As for angst: some of my favorite Star Wars fanfic is written from Leia's perspective and takes seriously the fact that this young woman witnessed the destruction of her planet - in a situation that left her with more than usual bit of survivor's guilt - and has survived serious torture. On the Millenium Falcon, after escaping from the Death Star, Han tries to help her get patched up and he's aghast at how battered she is (those long white skirts and sleeves hide a lot of damage). She, of course, is not in the mood to let anyone touch her after what she just went through with Vader.

There's a whole series of stories that give an entirely new perspective on the movies and the spaces between episodes, providing an interesting picture of just how hard Leia has to struggle to remain sane and functional. Falling in love with Han Solo doens't help. . .

1. I find you very fun and interesting. I really would like to get you know you more.

2. Wow! That is a good question. I think it would have to be a gaming related piece. Something to do with role-players over the age of 30.

probably our biggest common interest is alternative spirituality. i think i'd ask you to write an article describing your journey away from the christian church and then back. in fact, if you felt like writing such an article, i might have a venue. let me check on that. :>

Writing that story in a concise enough form for an article would be a real challenge.

Venue?!? I'm interested! Let me know what kind of word count they would be looking for!

hrm. a friend mentioned this journal to me because she's involved with it, but it's not quite as ideal as i'd thought: http://www.exponentii.org/submissions.html

it primarily prints mormon feminist stuff, but she asked me if i'd be interested in writing some personal reflections on goddess spirituality for it at some point -- they publish stuff by women in other traditions as well. i don't know when or if i'll get around to writing for it, but i thought i'd pass on the link. :>

Well. We're friends, ain't we?

I'm going to be selfish here on the request, because there's something I need, and you're the expert. As you know, I'm writing a fantasy novel with Francine. One of the ingredients is an established, orthodox, political Church that is absolutely the province of women (well, wenateem, but whatever).

In short, the State is run by men, the Church by women.

I really liked the post you did waaay back about arguments for men not being capable of leading a spiritual organization, and I'd like a serious expansion on that.

I can send you some basic background and theology, if it will help... :)

I'll have to go back through the archives to find the piece. I believe the original work was by Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, (and if not her, some other feminist theologian of similar stature) -- but expanding on it for your purposes could be fun.

I'm posting this on Sunday morning. I'll call you later today and we can chat.

I met you because we have [livejournal.com profile] mommybird in common. I like the way you think in general, and I specifically like reading when you talk about spirituality. And, um, I must admit - gaming.

If I were to ask you to write an article, I think I'd like you to go more in depth on some of the counselling you've done.

[livejournal.com profile] mommybird is wonderful, isn't she?

I think I'd like you to go more in depth on some of the counselling you've done.

Your suggestion is one of the most intriguing, because I haven't done that much counseling. My most significant effort in this area was helping two of my gaming friends confront and deal with their bad habits that contributed to our group's explosive re-organization a couple of years ago. Hmmm. . . Maybe I could combine that with [livejournal.com profile] gothic_coop's idea about gaming by people over 30.

1. You are on my reading/access list, because we have similar experiences, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one. :-) Also because I'd like to develop a genuine friendship with you that includes mutual interest in each other's lives.

2. I have no idea, sorry.

1. I think you found me via [livejournal.com profile] queenofhalves? You're a nice lj friend. I appreciate your comments on my entries, and I find them helpful, so I want to offer support to you when and where I can. Every now and then you write an entry that gets me thinking, and I like that too. I have a small lj friends list, and I like the little touches of other people's lives and other worlds - including you - that it brings to me.

2. Hmmmm. Perhaps "A beginners guide to archetypes", or "Archetypes in the Office and the Bedroom"?

Perhaps "A beginners guide to archetypes", or "Archetypes in the Office and the Bedroom"?

I really do like this idea, although I'm not sure there's much I could contribute that would be unique. There's a lot of material out there these days about how various types and archetypes interact. Still. . . I'll have to ponder it.

Thanks for the input!
