Well, I've somehow managed to seriously compromise my Quicken register.

I spent more than an hour trying to figure out a huge discrepancy in my reconciliation process, and then decided to try to fix it by finally setting up automatic downloads from my online bank records.

Not the best idea I've had.

I'm going to be digging out from this one for a while.

Fortunately that online account info is up to date and accurate, so I do know how much money I have. I just need to get my register into alignment.

And now I'm up way to far past my bedtime, I've missed my Tiwaz blot and my evening practice. I'm hoping I get points for trying to be responsible with my householder duties.

*sigh/grumble/yawn

Oh well. . . as the lady said: Tomorrow is another day.

I used to use automatic downloads, but I ran into the same problem. Plus the fact that (at my bank at least) the payee information that is downloaded often bears little resemblance to reality. So now I put everything into Quicken directly and just check it periodically against my online accounts. Beats the hell out of doing a monthly reconciliation. :-)

I use Pocket Quicken; have you ever tried that? That way I don't get overwhelmed with my pocketbook stuffed with receipts; I enter everything into my Treo as it happens. Also works on other Smartphones.

Yes, I just started using Pocket Quicken a few weeks ago, and I love it! The key, of course, is to not leave the place of the transaction without entering the info first!

There's a "naming rules" (or something like that) function that I've learned to use, which corrects the issue with those awful download names. The big deal last night was learning how to use the "match" "unmatch" and "look up manually" options so that I made sure things didn't duplicate.

I think that I've finally got a handle on it.

FYI --- f the discrepancy was a multiple of 9, it's a numeric transposition in one of the entries. (For example, say you had a transaction for $119 and you entered it as $191, for a discrepancy of $72.)

I wish I lived up there so I could use my bookkeeper-fu to figure out what happened and show you how to fix it! Still, adjusting the register to agree with the lower figure is a decent resolution, and if you're manually entering everything from here on out it may well not happen again.

(That said, if you end up off the other way by the same amount? Accept it and adjust the register to reflect the extra $$.)
