I picked up The Underworld Initiation a few months ago, but wasn't able to get into it. It's just not where my spirituality is right now.

What is "consort" music? I keep having visions of a tall, dark and handsome prince, but I'm fairly certain that's not what it refers to.

I will add violetisblue to my friends list! Is this person someone you know from your "real life" or someone like me that you met here on LJ?

And I will watch "The Wedding Banquet" sometime. I've heard it's worth watching, but it never got high on my list. If you're recommending it, I'll move it up my Netflix queue!

violetisblue was unknown to me before I started my Livejournal. She was one of the first, if not *the* first, to read my journal without already knowing me through online slash fandom. We discovered we had a passion for writing and a desire to branch out from fanfiction to original fic in common, and our friendship has blossomed from there.

Consort music is sixteenth/seventeenth century instrumental music: lutes, violas da gamba, harpsichord. Composers include William Lawes, Orlando Gibbons, William Byrd, Thomas Tomkins. Sooooothing.

I'm not sure why that Ang Lee film popped into my head when I thought of you, but there it was. It's quite good, and touching.

Thanks for the clarifications -- but I'm still curious about why the word "consort" is used. I've heard of musical groups described as consorts but have never found out the history of the word in that context.
