Neither of my menfolk had watched Babylon-5, and I am taking great pleasure in remedying this condition. I own seasons 1-4 on DVD but hadn't watched more than an isolated episode or two in years. Now we're just about halfway through season one. Watching it all again, seeing it unfold and being able to appreciate the dropped hints and foreshadowing but not remembering all the details, has been great.

Even so, I was unprepared for the impact of watching "Signs and Portents" for the first time in years.

Don't ask me why I was surprised, but when I saw Mordern walking alone up a long corridor illuminated only by circles of red-orange light, a shivery-thrill swept through my body, and something inside me called out This is it! This is the beginning! I was delighted all out of proportion to what I might have expected -- had I even thought to expect anything.

And then The Question: "What do you want?" So simple, so basic, uttered by a smiling but vaguely unsettling young man.

Delenn is building something from what looks like thin pieces of colorful, slotted plastic.
I had to fight down the urge to burst out "Wait until you see what that is!"
She alone seems to understand who -- or what -- Mordern is, but we don't yet know why.

The word "shadows" is uttered for the first time.

A huge, bright-black spider ship appears for the first time, effortlessly destroys another ship, and disppears again. No explanation, except that it is -- perhaps -- somehow connected with Mordern.

And all the while I'm hearing Vir's voice in the back of my head, his own answer to Mordern's question: I'd like to live just long enough. . .

It's good to be back with my old friends.

It's good to have my new friends with me and enjoy them becoming acquainted.

Next stop: David Warner in "Grail". . .
