Oscars?

This is the first time in several years that I have not planned for weeks in advance to watch the Oscars, which is usually one of my favorite guilty pleasures. This year I've been entirely indifferent to the entire process. I do think it would be nice if Peter O'Toole finally won, but I don't care enough to actually watch the show.

I'm kind of disappointed.

I actually want to watch it because I like Ellen DeGeneres. I really liked the original evening sitcom and I'm only slightly disappointed now because she doesn't (perhaps she feels that she can't due to her audience) incorporate gay subject matter into her show. I liked it when she did that because she was being open and honest and getting us to laugh with her at herself. I felt it brought about a new era of openness and acceptance of people in a culture that is sometimes very narrow. I was very disappointed and not very surprised when the evening sitcom was cancelled. Even without the gay material in her show I still think she's one of the funniest people around. I really want to see what she says tonight.

That does sound a little sad. Do you think it's a change with the show/industry, or a change in your life? Like when a guilty pleasure just stops fitting properly?

I've always expected too much from them, and haven't been able to enjoy it in years.

I think Ellen had to face reality and adapt herself to her audience and what we as a culture want to listen to. Ellen's talk show is on at 9 am. Most housewives and out of work construction guys aren't turning the tv on to watch gay jokes and that's the sad reality. Like I said, though, Ellen can be completely vanilla, completely middle class sounding and be the funniest thing around.

I haven't actually watched the Oscars if a long, long time. Well, except for the one a couple of years ago when Return of the King got the whole kit-and-kaboodle on behalf of the Lord of the Rings franchise.

I enjoy movies greatly, but I get tired of the hype. And currently, I'd fairly disgusted with how much attention is given to the lives of people in the entertainment industry. It makes me a little crazy.

I plan on popping in the last disc we have for Planetes, and get my fix of anime set in outer space ... or maybe I'll plug in Witch Hunter Robin again.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years. In fact, I was never an Oscar watcher, though sometimes I'd tune in just for the dresses. But I've gotten to a point in my life that I cannot stand to watch the self-congratulatory preening of basically narcissistic megalomaniacs who are actually pretty shallow. I don't know if I've changed or they have.

I heard someone refer to it as a trade show. I think maybe that's right. Who wants to go to a trade show for a trade you're not involved in? If they weren't all so beautiful and well-dressed, nobody would care. But let's face it, a gorgeous dress covers a multitude of sins. ;)

I understand completely - I actually forgot they were on until I turned on the TV for some other reason. Ended up watching some, but flipped around during acceptance speeches.

I just don't see movies anymore, more's the pity, and the last time I saw the movies that were nominated, I really didn't care anyway.

Thought you'd appreciate that the Daughter has decided she likes the Oscars - but only the movie clips and the dresses. She told us she wants to write movies and 'take the pictures for them' ;>.
