Snow Day

Microsoft closed their offices today because of the weather, but my office is open.
WTF?

I, however, am working from home today. I have two large projects that require sustained concentration to write, so I have some legitimate, sink-my-teeth-into-it work to justify my pay.

However, the schools are closed today so my Daughter is home with me, which is going to cut into my actual work. I probably won't get a full eight hours in, but it will be more than nothing, and less time cut into my rapidly disappearing PTO.

There are people who didn't get home last night due to the snow. I feel very fortunate I made it at all.

Our Your company has the most draconian policies about inclement weather. Once about seven years ago I called in to see if the office was open (this was before the implementation of the hotline) and the supervisor of my department told me not to come in.
The next day, the manager of my department called all of us who had stayed home into a conference room, berated us for a full 45 minutes, and then extracted a PTO day from our balances - even though she, too, had stayed home.
Another time, it was looking like the same story, so I drove to work carefully and slowly... on my seven mile drive, I passed over 40 cars abandoned on the side of the road, or, in some cases, in the middle of the road. Our Director said the offices would never be closed unless the Governer declared a state of emergency for the county.

Gack!

That's background I hadn't heard before.

There's an offsite GM meeting today and tomorrow with FL since we still don't have our own VP. I'd been a bit miffed that I haven't been involved at all, since Miss V handles all of his stuff -- but today I'm very glad I'm not expected to be there.
