Recognition and Vindication
Apr. 4th, 2006 05:42 pmMy division at work has a new-this-past-year recognition program which honors the top 10% of the team, based on a combination of factors. The qualifiers and selection criteria are different for hourly workers who have performance metrics to meet, and salaried employees who are evaluated based on achievement within the rating system of the company's bonus plan.
Then there are the admin assistants. Although hourly, we don't have metrics to meet. And Miss V and I, who used to be salaried (until the recent re-evaluation of exempt and non-exempt under the labor laws) had these bonus projects. So admins had no specific criteria. Qualification for consideration was based on "nomination". And then on the subjective assessment of the leadership team.
The announcement of winners was today. I was the only admin in the division to be included.
This means that I will enjoy an all expenses paid trip (with the other winners) to a beach resort in Florida for four days in May -- and the two weekdays we're gone will be paid days off but not count against our vacation accrual.
This also means that the leadership team, most of whom are directly supported by Miss V, chose to honor me and not her. (It was not an either/or situation, but I was chosen, and she was not.)
This has got to be painful for her. After all her frustrations and complaints and attempts to "coach" me in how to be a better admin, I'm sure this feels like a slap in the face.
And to be honest, I was shocked to be a winner. I don't consider myself a "top performer" -- and if an admin was honored, I really expected it to be Miss V, not me.
On the other hand, Miss V is an excellent admin, but that's all she does. I have been involved with a lot of special projects that go beyond my specific job description, and that probably weighed in the balance.
My annual review with Jeannie is Wednesday. I'll probably find out more then about what was said and why I was chosen.
And that meeting iself constitutes a milestone: it will be the first time I have been at one job long enough to have more than one annual review.
And now I have really got to step up the fitness program again. I want to look better in a bathing suit by mid-May!
