I'm writing a paper on Balzac (and his animalized representations of the main characters in Eugénie Grandet, in case you are curious) and in my secondary sources I am constantly running into references about how he was influenced greatly by the writings of certain religious figures. The two most often mentioned are Saint-Martin and Swedenborg. Example:
En relisant les oeuvres si extraordinaries des écrivains mystiques qui se sont occupés des sciences dans leurs relations avec l'infini, tels que Swedenborg...
(In re-reading the extraordinary workds of mystical writers who are occupied with the sciences in their relationship with the inifinite, such as Swedenborg...")
