Glorificus was the main villain of Buffy Season 5. She was a goddess from another universe who had been exiled and locked inside the body of a young man named Ben. She needed this mystical energy thingy to use as a key that would unlock the barriers and allow her to return home. These monks turned that "key" into human form, making her into Buffy's sister Dawn.

If you do, be sure to stop after Season 5. The final two seasons went downhill fast.
