To energy-working/magical friends:

There is a huge amount of information out there about chakras and how to work with them, especially opening/clearing.

Are there any resources you would particularly recommend, or suggest I avoid?

Caroline Myss' _Anatomy of the Spirit_ is a good book for discerning mental/emotional/spiritual issues that may arise in each chakra. My experience and belief is that this is different for each person, and is more dynamic than static, but her book is insightful, and offers well-grounded perspective.

Another favorite book of mine is _Inner Reiki: A Practical Guide for Healing and Meditation_ by Tanmaya Honervogt.

Most of what is out there is very new-age-y "if you write it, they will buy" and the authors are not credible. (The ability to write a book does not automatically make one an expert, in my opinion.)

I would recommend you check out books and websites written by older, respected (mostly Indian) yogis, as the chakras originated in classical Indian philosophy. (Which isn't to say other traditions are devoid of a concept like the chakras, just that the chakras themselves originate elsewhere.)
