It's taken me a couple of days to formulate my thoughts about the adult content self-flagging, and I've appreciated reading the posts others have made on the topic.* I find it interesting that no one on any of my friends lists have had anything positive to say about it.

What I've found, after temporarily changing the settings of another LJ of mine to "Adult Content" is that it doesn't do anything to protect children. (No surprise, really.) All it does is demand that someone clicking onto that blog select one of two buttons: "I'm old enough to read this stuff", or "Get Me Out of Here."

There is nothing to prevent the precious little darlings from clicking and reading -- and I'm sure 6A is well aware of this. It's not protection for the children, it's CYA for 6A.

What bugs me the most is that there is equal "protection" for children in a situation where members of the LJ community practice simple respect and use LJ Cuts whenever they are posting text or images that could be disturbing or offensive to others -- not just underage kids. Go ahead and and post the stuff, just do it in a way that allows everyone to choose.

This isn't just about sex. Someone on another f-list recently posted an image of their own infected spider bite. I was scrolling down the page and suddenly there it was. Not "adult content" but definitely something I didn't want to see and resented having pushed into my face. I like looking at some of the adult content on LJ -- but I appreciate it when it's behind a cut, so I can choose whether or not to click if the wolfling -- or my parents! -- are nearby.

Then there's my pet peeve that "adult content" has come to mean content that's offensive to mainstream sensibilities, rather than material that's thoughtful, complex, or deep. I wish there was more of that kind of "adult content" on LJ!

*Flagging the posts of others is a separate topic, one I was immediately against.

The Wild Hunt posted a fun article today about how a festival is being held in Aspen to pray for snow -- not to the Christian god, but to Ullr, the Norse god of skiing and hunting.

It's so strange and hard and weirdly sublime to listen to songs like this. . . having lived them. . . Knowing that we did love like this.

This is how it was, for us, that last night, that last morning. . .

damn
This is the first time I've cried in a couple of weeks.

If The Sun Never Rises

Hold me like there's no next time
Like it's the last time you'll have the chance to
Show me how much you want me
Like I'm the only thing that matters
No one knows when the world's gonna end
So let's make love like we never will again

'Cause if the sun never rises, I wanna go down in flames
I want the last thing I hear to be you whisperin' my name
If every moment together is time that we borrowed
Then hold me tight and love me like there's no tomorrow

I hope we live forever
And that day will never come, but darlin'
I know if it ever happens
I couldn't imagine not being in your arms
There's so much we take for granted in life
So love me baby like we're running out of time

'Cause if the sun never rises, I wanna go down in flames
I want the last thing I hear to be you whisperin' my name
If every moment together is time that we borrowed

Hold me tight and love me like there's no tomorrow

One day, my friends, there won't be a tomorrow.
Cherish those you love, while you have them.

Tin Man

I'm up past my bedtime because the wolfling and I watched the first half of the new miniseries "Tin Man" on the Sci-Fi channel.

It was a lot of fun. Both the wolfling and I enjoyed it and are looking forward to tomorrow night. It's fascinating to see which elements of the original story they kept and which they twisted or dropped. It's also likely that the writers read "Wicked." The characters aren't the same, but there are the same police state overtones.

If you like Oz, or alternate fairy tales, or Zooey Deschanel (who plays D.G.), I recommend it.

The first half will be shown again on Monday night, before the conclusion.
