More Roller Coaster at Work
May. 20th, 2004 09:53 pmWell, I found out this morning that the woman whose job I have been doing is not, after all, returning from maternity leave tomorrow (Friday) -- so I continue to have a temp job until such time as they hire someone to fill the position.
Let me see here. . . Where have I heard that one before???
I did have an interview today for a position as Team Lead at the NOM -- the department which handles orders from our indirect dealers. "Team Lead" is a coaching and procedures improvement position, which could be a lot of fun.
Miss Vicki told me that I shouldn't interview for the position if I wasn't really interested in it, since that would be "misleading" them. Then she got huffy at me when I expressed some irritation that she was suggesting I would do so. "I'm just trying to help you," she told me, aggrieved. And then, what really got me: "I've been looking out for you from the beginning!"
Excuse me?
That sound you hear is my teeth grinding together.
Also today, I received a phone call from another admin (my very first contact at this business) who asked me what it was like to work with Vicki. I went into an empty conference room to have the conversation. I usually don't take time away from my desk to gossip, but the woman calling had worked for Vicki's boss for a long time and still feels significant loyalty to her. She told me she had been hearing complaints from other people about Vicki and wanted to get my perspective. So I told her the truth. I also told her that I recognize that some of what irritates me about Vicki are probably things that some people find irritating about me, so perhaps I'm mostly resenting my own mirror image. But it was a bit comforting to hear that I'm *not* the only person who she rubs the wrong way.
And did I mention the bagpipes?
Evidently the company is making great progress toward our annual goals, and to celebrate the executives made several kinds of fuss today: customized baseball caps on our chairs when we came in this morning, a message from the CEO over the PA system, and then a bagpipe with five drummers made the round of the building, followed by people pulling a wagon full of microwave popcorn packages which they tossed out to everyone.
A very strange day.
