Introverts / Compliment
May. 21st, 2004 06:01 amA friend of mine sent out a link to an article describing what it means to be an introvert, and what it's like to be an introvert in a world dominated by extroverts. I'm not *really* an extrovert, you see. I just play one on LJ, where I can type my thoughts when I'm in the mood and read and digest the words of others at my leisure, at my convenience. The article, which is both amusing and informative, is here.
When I sent a response to her, I included a quotation from the article which denied the common assumption that introverts are arrogant because we often aren't "chatty" like extroverts, and tend to hold back in social situations, which we find draining rather than stimulating. This has been a judgement I've heard about myself on more than one occasion.
My friend forwarded this comment on to her SO, a man who I have met only once, but in the context of a long evening during which he joined us and a few of our other women friends for coffee at our favorite bookstore. Mostly he listened as we conducted a lively conversation, but he took part when he could (and we did try to include him).
Anyway, later in the day, I received this email from him: Steph forwarded your email to me. I just wanted to throw in my couple of pennies of unsolicited observation. The time I met you I found you brilliant, sensitive, and deep. Maybe
that's my introverted bias showing.
A very nice, unexpected compliment in the middle of the day!
