It's like this. . . The woman in the icon is Julia Ormond, and this photo of her is the primary portrait for my Star Wars RPG character Princess Deidre Organa Warhit.

Several years ago (game time and real time), Deidre and her comrades passed through an anomaly in space, and when she came out the other side, she had a lightsaber (apparently of her own construction) and some rudimentary skill with it. She was not, however, Force sensitive.

One of her companions was a Jedi, and he began to train her, but the lightsaber takes a great deal of time and skill to master -- and it really, really helps if you can add your Force skill dice to your lightsaber skill dice if you actually want to do something.

Then there was the small matter of Deidre's long-suppressed rage and trauma about her arrest, torture, and rape, the destruction of her home planet, life as a fugitive and intelligence agent, the iminent departure from her team of the man she was falling in love with. . . When she arrived on Darknon Station, she was not in A Good Place.

She really didn't want to find out where the ship carrying Ute's thought-to-be-dead wife was going, since she was in love with Ute and did not want him to leave. And when the station security officer who was stonewalling her turned out to be a lieutenant in the Imperial Intelligence corp, she snapped. She drew her lightsaber, ignited it, warned the man to give her the answers she wanted, and then laid it against the back of his legs.

She only intended to burn him a little to persuade him to tell her what she wanted to know. The fact that in this moment of insanity she was violating all her own principles and and honor of her weapon was bad enough. What made it even worse was that I fumbled the dice roll, and she nearly cut the man's legs off.

The moment after it happened, she returned to herself with a shock, dropped the weapon, and swore never to wield a lightsaber again.

It was a fascinating gaming moment. I wasn't thinking clearly when I had her take that action. It was one of those moments that gamers and writers know when the character suddenly takes over. (And my friends were even more stunned than I was!) But once I began thinking about it, it made more and more sense -- and it ended up being a critical pivot point for ongoing character development for all the PC's not just Deidre.

We put the ISB agent in sick bay, fixed his legs, and released him without further mayhem. Deidre began to meditate and seek healing for her emotional wounds.

We did find Kara. Ute did leave. He came back and married Deidre. A few months later he died, but he got better, and they are now living happily ever after.

But Deidre's lightsaber has been locked away and she never touched it again.

Peter and the Ex used to say that if anyone tried to break into our house, it would be their humanitarian duty to kill him quickly and cleanly, because I would have fun tearing him apart in small, bloody pieces.
