In response to the letter I posted this morning [friends-locked], [livejournal.com profile] toesontheground asked me what I meant by "Grail Priestess." I figured that since he's one of my longest-term LJ friends and he needed to ask, I should probably post the answer here:

In my case, "Grail Priestess" means that I was ordained as a Priestess of the Grail by the Ordo Arcanorum Gradalis, a fellowship of the Holy Grail. After several years of study, I went through a ritual of ordination that included anointing and the laying on of hands. Within the context of the Order, I am authorized to perform all the sacraments, including the Grail Mass, and to represent the Order publically.

In a broader sense, being a Grail Priestess means that my vocation includes a couple of key concepts: the facilitating of other peoples' quests for the Grail (that is: for union with the Divine), and the healing of the Wasteland, which is both the outer ecological condition of our world and the inner condition of our souls.

I was ordained in May of 2001, and have done very little to actually live out this commitment and consecration since then. As I indicated in the letter I posted, one of the things I realized in the last few days was just how far I had let this part of my identity be covered up, and how important it is that I manifest it again. It is crucial to the work I'm doing now regarding the further path of my studies and the way in which I live out my vocation in the world.

To give a sense of what this actually means in real life, here is a brief statement I wrote on the first anniversary of 9/11 and posted to the OAG list.

On this day of grief and remembrance, when it is so easy to feel
overwhelmed by all the evil and hatred in the world, let us also
remember that we are all Grail Bearers.

We each carry within ourselves a Grail Chapel where we come into
communion with the Divine Mystery.

We are each, by virtue of this communion, vessels of Divine Love,
Divine Grace, Divine Healing, Divine Peace.

We all can *be* Grails, walking on the Earth, walking through the
Wasteland, channeling these blessings to all we meet.

Ordination doesn't matter. Denomination doesn't matter. Doctrine
doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is love, and a willingness to serve.

Hm. After reading this, I think I have to re-subscribe to the OAG list.

It's not very active, but there are usually good responses when someone takes the time to write and initiate a new thread.

Are you still managing the list? I re-subbed and am waiting for confirmation.

It would be great to have some new members to get the discussion going again!

That's a nice prayer. Thanks for the explanation - sometimes I'm not sure if I haven't been told something or if it has slipped through the mesh of my memory net. And I'm glad you're finding a (re)new(ed) sense of direction

I'm glad you asked about it. I needed to think about the answer for a while.
