Here it is Monday, and I feel like I never had a weekend -- but I actually had a fairly good one.

Friday I didn't feel well, stayed home from work, vegged out, then finally got down to serious work on my last paper. Friday night I watched the first half of the expanded edition of "The Two Towers", fast-forwarding through the unchanged scenes with Gollum, lingering on the scenes with Aragorn and/or Eowyn.

I went to bed late, and just as I was really settling in - at about 12:15am - the phone rings. It's my old friend JAH (see "Ghost of Halloween Past" on 10/31 for more background details), calling to ask "Did you ever regret falling in love with me?" We ended up talking for about 40 minutes -- a kind of surreal, interesting, and sometimes touching conversation.

Saturday was back to the paper again, and some housecleaning. A friend of mine invited The Little Princess over to bake cookies, which gave her something fun to do and kept her out of my mental space for about four hours. Finished "Two Towers" that night, and stayed up too late watching a bunch of the behind-the-scenes features. Even more surreal than the previous night's phone call was watching Uruk-Hai hula dancing.

Sunday morning I got together with "The Church Ladies" for our December fellowship event, ran home to do more paper-writing, made a quick run to an out-of-area mall to pick up a Christmas present for a friend, then headed over to evening services at church. More paper writing after church. Got to bed late because I had stumbled over "Lake in the Clouds," the third book in a series by Sara Donati, and got swept up in the story -- something that is too rare a pleasure anymore.

This morning, I was perversely awake at 4:18am and could not get back to sleep. So I'm at work feeling a bit blurry, and wondering how I am going to get through what is going to be the busiest week of the season.

We don't have a Christmas tree yet, and no Christmas decorations up except the two nativity scenes we bought early last week. I had promised myself that we would do a lot of decorating this year, but it just hasn't happened. I had planned to do an overnight trip to my hometown this Saturday, to attend the annual production of Handel's "Messiah," which is one of my favorite Christmas traditions -- but now I'm seriously considering staying home instead, and taking The Little Princess out to buy a tree and decorate the house. If it doesn't happen this weekend, it may not happen at all.

Which I guess makes my decision for me. There's no way I can go to Longview if it means my daughter and I don't decorate our house and tree together.

I'm working on it. We hung out together Saturday evening, which was nice, but she spent most of Sunday with her dad.

We're reading "Mariel of Redwall," about a valiant "mousemaid" who surives to avenge herself and her father after a pirate attack.
