I find myself needing to buy a new ritual knife. It's supposed to have an antler horn and a steel blade.

I've been looking on eBay and Etsy, but so far I haven't found one that feels right -- not for less than $175 anyway. . .

Can anyone here recommend a particular shop or craftsperson?

I'll get back to you on this, anam chara. Allen is on a lot of bladesmithing forums because he's hoping to set up his own forge. If there's a smith who has one, or will make one to your hand, he'll know or find out.

Edit: Go here. Create an account. Good people and the best knife makers in the world, these, and Don Fogg is Allen's idol. http://forums.dfoggknives.com/

Look through this forum. If they don't have what you're looking for, post and ask: http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showforum=24&s=06c553a094a08a3c33c53506a29a9a68

I know [livejournal.com profile] lupabitch occassionally makes knives.. but I have a feeling she doesn't use metal as the blade part, but rather antler or bone. Hm.

If I can get ahold of a metal blade, I can make something like that for you. I haven't done a metal/antler combo in several years, but I can do it.

There are a couple of options. The cheaper option that I used to do was to get cheap "pretty" knives (the kind that have naked women in fantasy scenes, or wolves, or somesuch, on the plastic handle) where the handle screws off. Or I can buy a brand new handmade blade from a knife maker. The latter would be easier at this point to get ahold of.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the knife won't have a metal hilt like these, but would instead be wrapped in leather or something similar at the juncture. It's not quite as neat in a conventional sense, but it's more fitting my style.

LMK if this is something you would be interested in. I can definitely keep the price under $100 if the blade isn't too expensive, and less so if you provide the blade.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works is always our first choice when one of us needs a knife of any kind. They've got a lot of stag-handled blades in stock right now.

Atlanta Cutlery is our second stop, although they would usually (and in fact this time do) have a poorer selection of stag stuff.

He did my knife. It's beautiful, hand carved. And as sharp or not sharp as you need it.

I know my spousal unit also would recommend Ragweed Forge; he has one of their knives.
