Over the past year or so I've frequently found that when I attempt a new magical technique, or have certain kinds of otherworldy encounters with energy, I have distinct sensations in different parts of my head. Sometimes there's a sense of swelling/pressure, as if my 'mind' is literally expanding. Sometimes it's a pain, as if something is trying to open.

I've felt wedges of energy pushing into the top of my head, bands circling my head in various places, holes being bored from the inside out or outside in, as if to allow pressure to escape. Last night, there was a line of pressure/light pain horizontally across the full width of my forehead, as if the top of my head should be able to open like a lid.

These sensations usually are not accompanied by any kind of straining on my part. Usually I've been in a relaxed meditative state. There have never been any lingering after-effects, and they usually do not repeat the next time I encounter that same energy.

It's as if some part of me has to be opened or stretched when encountering new forms of energy -- or new ways of working with familiar energy -- but once that has happened future exposures occur without any sensation.

I'd be interested in hearing if others have similiar experiences.

Yes, exactly! I've had similar things. Sensations of things spreading our where I wouldn't normally have energetic plumage (I've had "plumes" on my head since real little), pain, tingling, coolness, pressure, splitting, things pushing in. And then the next time I don't have that, or if I do (rare) it's to a much milder degree. I would assume perhaps in the cases it happens again it would be because something was incomplete.

The short answer is "yes".

I've had a headache on and off since Lammas, which is kind of "par for the course" now but still... not exactly fun. It's not so much healing-module-energy-work for me, though, as it is God-encounters and things changing. I cannot have energy workers work on me anymore, for example, as I have an "allergic reaction" to Reiki (this has always been the case, though) and my chakras have over the years *moved* to not where they're supposed to be (I've been "modified", as some have put it). But it does seem that periodically when there's more woo-woo I get headaches, more of a pressure/tension than anything debilitating, and my sinuses start to clear out. I haven't figured this out.

I don't do magick, per se, as far as doing the same kind of mind-directed energy work... but my meditations, prayers and sexual activity, as well as listening to music, often comes with kinesthetic experiences of different kinds - feelings of motion in or out of my head or heart or womb area, unexplained temperature changes, experiencing color in the airspace around me, etc.

I have similar things happen - different sorts of sensations (pain in various places in my head), and not when I'm trying to do something new, but I do have physical sensations as things shift for me energetically (whether as a result of work I've done, something done to/for me by a noncorporeal, or some combination thereof.

Called an "astral headache"
very common, in fact.

many causes, among them;
-not grounding before doing energy work, or staying grounded when working
-moving through layers that you haven't encountered before, the resistance of which can come as a surprise (which is what it sounds like you may be experiencing)
-Walking through a defined circle without cutting a door through, or having one cut for you if it's someone else's circle.
-touching someone else's magically protected jewelry, tools, gear without shielding first. Many put specific spells on their stuff, (sort of like an energic electric fence) to keep others away. Even if they give you permission, always a good idea to shield your hands, as they may not have told the tool that you have permission! If they don't want you to touch it, shielding won't stop their own keepaway spell from activating.
