One of my assignments from Ereshkigal to be completed this weekend was to create an altar for Her (other complementary underworld deities were also welcome: Black Isis, Anubis, Hecate, Persephone). Most of it was left up to my own creativity and resources, but there were two requirements: a black candle, and an image of Her.

As I believe I've mentioned before, there are not a lot of images of Ereshkigal around, and I haven't found any statues of Her either. So with Her assent, I spent several hours googling and came up with a wide variety of images that represent my experience of Her. This afternoon I went out and bought several pieces of black posterboard, and I just got finished printing the images, trimming them, and gluing them to the sheets in a collage that's about one foot high and three feet wide. It's an interesting range of images, from the mysterious to the beautiful to the scary. The ends are bordered on one side by a Hanged Man image and on the other by Inanna hanging in the underworld. The central image is of a dark temple/throne room.

The scary images were a struggle. I don't believe that many people want to contemplate scary/unsettling images, but that's what working with Ereshkigal demands. I had to find the fine line between making sure I included Her authentically scary aspect while still having something I could live with, especially since the altar is in my bedroom.

My camera needs to be re-charged, but once I have it running again I'll try to get some photos.

In the meantime, now that I've completed my obligation to Her, I'm going to make some time for contemplation and worship of Freya. Ereshkigal may have priority, but I can't spend all my time focused on Her alone, otherwise I'm going to be spending far too much time with underworld energy. I need some light and joy and playtime in the sunshine.

Hard work is good, but so is recognizing the need to balance it with something lighter.

Generally, all around --- good for you!

I think She is. . . Especially now that I've lit the candle.
