1) What personality trait in others makes you absolutely mental?
Social insanity. Someone who keeps complaining about the way other people treat them, but doesn't do anything him- or herself to either seek out different kinds of companions and/or adjust their own behavior to stop provoking that response from other people.
2) What personality trait or characteristic in yourself would you eliminate if you could?
Lazy perfectionism. Not being able to do it exactly right is too often my excuse for not doing anything at all.
3) What about your personality is your secret pride and joy?
It's in my LJ title: From the Sublime to the Ridiculous. I revel in a wide range of interests, activities, and entertainments. I take great pleasure in discussing the fine points of esoteric doctrines and their implications for an individual's life of faith, or acting as Clan Mediator for my group of friends. I also can become completely swept away in a roleplaying game, in writing fanfic, or watching Desperado for the umpteenth time. I can appreciate a fine production of Shakespeare, discuss the production critically from several perspectives, and/or revel in the silliness of a parody.
4) Is there a trait or characteristic you admire in others that you wish you owned?
I've known people who practically glowed with warmth and openness toward others, without being sweetness-and-light irritating. I would like to have the quality.
5) Fast forward to you as a very senior citizen. What sort of character are you?
It could go either way: either a dreamy, semi-withdrawn person who has delightful stories and comments to make when I feel like it, or going to the other end of the scale and finally being as bold and outrageous and as I've never yet dared to be.

Date: 2004-09-11 01:03 pm (UTC)Mmmmm. I think my friends S* and P* (who you've read about) have this quality in some fair degree. I've tried to understand it, and I see a few things (so far!)
a) They have positive prejudice about strangers: they expect to find them to be good people, or at least to have some important good qualities - so they approach people with a friendly smile and an open heart.
b) They have a way of looking expectantly for the good in others - and a knack for finding and bringing it into the light - which, when it happens, of course, reinforces their expectations in a!
c) They are modestely extrovert in personality type, and they have a deep need to be how they are: to draw others to them, to reach others.
d) They are authentic and understand (often intuitively) what their authenticity and integrity demands (don't take any BS!) and feel free to express it.
