I'm expecting my manager to send out an email to our team today announcing my promotion. However it won't go to friends on other teams, especially my previous one. I want to share the good news, but I don't necessarily have good instincts where office politics are concerned. (Does this even count as office politics?)

So I'm turning to you, O Wise LJ Friends, for advice

Share your news when you're on personal time with them, having a personal chat, catching up, that sort of thing.
I'd say don't make a big announcement via email or by personally going round and telling everyone, as it really could look like bragging that way.

I agree. Though I marked to go tell people personally, I would probably invite the friends out (or over to your house) for a small "yay me" sort of celebreation (drinks, candy, dinner, what-have-you). It's only bragging if you are putting on airs. But your friends should be happy for you. :-)

This all depends if they are your Friends or Office Buddies. I would share this news one on one as a "By the way I got Promoted." Friends will be very happy for you. Office Buddies will not be as impressed with it.

Maybe it's because I'm english - and we're very reserved at this sort of thing, but I'd keep quiet.

Best thing would be if you could persuade your boss to send out an announcement on your behalf - that way everyone finds out, but you don't have to tell them !

In my office (English office of a global law firm), what usually happens is that the person who has been promoted takes their friends (and for very senior appointments, their whole Department) out for a few drinks to celebrate, and generally visits people personally to invite them. Your candy option seems the closest to that :-)

I've never worked anywhere that large, so I don't have any experience with this, but my inclination would be to keep it to my(your)self. Word will get out, or the next time you see any of these people it can be included in your response to "How are you?"

Yay and Congrats! What the others here said regarding getting the news round. Do what makes you feel happiest about spreading the word. Me, I'd keep quiet until a suitable opening in conversation came up, or I'd tell a good friend in one of the departments if I can't contain my excitement, and leave them to spread the word. But my English reserve tends to kick in on these kinds of things. :-)
