It's another story about a restricted society of women in another time and place, but at 41 pages into it, I'm finding it far more interesting and engrossing than P&P.

ETA: In This House of Brede, published in 1969, is the story of a widowed professional woman who enters a convent of Benedictine nuns.

It's one of my favorite books ever. I'm eager to see what you think of it.

I'm curious about this book. I grew up at a Benedictine college (raised by dorm residents and monks--explains a lot). While I'm far from Catholic, I have a deep respect and affection for the Benedictine order as a whole.

I remember watching a film version- a one-off TV movie, I think. I don't remember much about it, except that it starred Diana Rigg.

My father in law lent me the book a few years ago and I loved it.

This was one of the Big Formative Books for me; I discovered it as a child and read it over and over. It showed me while I was still very young that women could be intensely focused on spiritual life but still emotionally healthy and creative.

It wasn't much like the book, but Rigg was an excellent casting choice for Philippa.

I think I first learned about the book through your journal -- but it's been so long I don't remember clearly.
