Bujold wrote a science fiction -- or space opera -- series about the Vorkosigan family. The first two books are now published as an omnibus called Cordelia's Honor, but you could probably still find the first book, Shards of Honor in a used bookstore.

The story is about Cordelia Naismith, one of my favorite heroines, the captain of an expeditionary force, who runs into Aral Vorkosigan right before the start of a war. Cordelia is from Beta, a high-tech, highly diverse and tolerant culture. Aral is from Vor, a less high tech warrior-caste culture. He is also at the top of my Fictional Men I Would Marry in an Instant list.

The books are fast-paced, funny, and deeply humanitarian. Bujold cares a great deal about the dignity and worth of all people, especially those are physically different: those with birth defects, the genetically engineered, the severely disabled, clones. She also does a great job investigating the tops of honor, family, medical ethics, and war.

They are books I always find myself reading out loud. Some of them can be serious and heartbreaking. A Civil Campaign, one of the later books, is a romantic comedy about young people and marriage that still makes me laugh out loud after three readings.

I recommend them to anyone.

Bujold also has written some fantasy novels, which I don't care for, but many other people seem to like them.

Ah, I love Bujold. Thanks for the pointers to these. There's a particular ex-boyfriend that I should use the "but he's my monster" icon for whenever I post about him. :-)
