[livejournal.com profile] kateri_thinks wanted to know more about my "yes" to firing a gun.

It's not much of a story, really.

I'd never had any meaningful exposure to firearms, and was curious about them. I'd also been toying with the idea of purchasing one and learning to use it for home protection, but wanted to find out how it felt to actually handle one before I took such a big step.

My friend the Welshman was a former police officer, and he took me to a firing range twice, along with several handguns from his personal collection. However, his weapons were far too large for my hands, so we ended up renting a smaller one for me to use.

I liked it less than I expected to. The kick when firing was fairly powerful, and I found it a bit scary. I was all too aware of the deadly power that was there in my hands and not fully under control. I was also a bit freaked out by the fact that there were people all around me firing guns, capable of killing someone. A non-rational part of me found this more alarming than my conscious, rational mind could fully overcome.

In all, I was rather disappointed in myself for not doing better, either in the technique of firing or in the emotional aspect. And it wasn't something I cared enough about to put effort into getting the proper training to overcome.

Fire a weapon is really coming to grips of one question.

Can I kill?

As soon as you figure that out. The ability to shot becomes easier.

I am a yes to firing a gun as well. I am very wary of them, yet I like shooting. A good thing too as Sean is very good with guns and wants very much for me to become comfortable with them as we will have them in the house. He is also one of the most responsible people I have ever met when he comes to guns. Also, since I have lived here the last few months I have learned, on his last visit, how to quickly load and fire my gun. It's a good feeling all things considdered.

I've always thought that I could kill in defense of self or others. But that seemed very distant from the range.

What I was most conscious of was the tremendous power in my hands and my limited ability to control it.

Do you think he'd be willing to work with me? It's an ability I'd like to have.

He may well. He's taken Daddy shooting. We'll ask him. *quiet smile* I like that you would trust him to. HUG

When I was in high school I had a much older boyfriend who used to go out and shoot trap with a shotgun. We used to go out together in the middle of the country and we'd shoot. It was tremendously fun. I loved being with him and doing crazy adult things that I'd never had the opportunity to do. I hardly ever hit the target, but it was so much fun.
