qos: (Daughter Odd)

My daughter goes to an "Outward Bound" school. Each classroom has its own "expedition," a central theme which the kids study from an interdisciplinary perspective. My daughter's fourth/fifth grade class is studying ancient Egypt.

As part of learning about archeology, the class has been split into two teams, each of which is creating a culture - and artifacts - for the other to study. My daughter's group is creating an island culture. The people wear coconuts on their head and clothing made of fish skins.

My daughter is in the kitchen with her stepsisters creating a battered scroll which depicts a young man
"having his rite of passage ceremony," she says. The boys have to complete a task assigned by the chief, but are sent on their way by a priestess (both of whom are depicted in the scroll). The girls sew a pappoose carrier with a picture of the god on it for their future children. Now she is trying to make a sewing needle. She's also working on a marriage necklace and a blessing stick.

She's not yet ten years old.

Hahaha

I had a similar experience the other day with my sister, who rang me up and said:

"I need to create a mystery religion or secret society for class. We have to make a brochure for it."

I didn't really know where to begin giggling at that statement.

We came up with a pretty cool goddess-centric, croney, Lilith-y concept of a group dedicated to understanding the spiral dance and women's role in bringing life to, and ushering it from, the world. But it still made me giggle.
