I had a minor medical procedure done today, one requiring the insertion of needles into my flesh. Before the procedure, an earnest young resident went through the "informed disclosure/consent" process with me.
The first item went something like this:
This procedure involves needles. There are three primary risks involved in the insertion of needles: pain, bleeding, and infection.
I couldn't help it. I broke out laughing.
We have gotten to the point that doctors have to disclose that the the insertion of needles into the body involve the risk of pain and bleeding.
On the other hand, I suppose that's better than "Now, now, this won't hurt a bit" right before they hurt you a lot.
In the interest of fairness, however, I should note that my entire procedure was painless. I'm not sure if my doctor was that good, or if the meditation exercises I was doing before the procedure had an impact. He seemed surprised when I told him that it hadn't hurt at all, and then asked if I had a high pain threshold. I really don't.
