Keeping House
Dec. 16th, 2006 05:45 pmSome people do spring cleaning. I always feel more like doing deep cleaning in the winter (when I do feel like doing deep cleaning).
Today, inspired by a post
quietearthling made several months ago, I went through my closet and the four bins of clothes that have been cluttering up my space. There are now six bags of clothing for donation in my entry way (that must go out tomorrow!), and one bin in my closet. Of the three empty bins, one long flat one will go back under my bed with my journals in it. My journals have been living in the bottom drawer of my nightstand, but deforming the drawer so it won't shut. This will put them in deep but safe storage and open up that drawer for use by the guys when they are here.
Of course, the imminent arrival of guests always helps, and
_storyteller_ is bringing his sister home for a couple of weeks on Monday, and
queenofhalves is visiting on Tuesday, so I have a bit of extra motivation, including for cleaning out my car. I excavated the trunk this afternoon, and will get the back seat (and under the seats) tomorrow afternoon. I expect Mr. Shop-Vac will help with that as well.
Cleaning out the clothing brought me face to face with a lot of old memories: my Golden Horde t-shirt (kept), my high school forensics team shirt (thrown out), lots of rocket company t-shirts and sweaters (some kept, some discarded), the strapless corseted sun dress I wore for the opening of my senior directing project in college (charity), the red sundress I wore in college (kept), my polar bear college sweatshirt (handed down to daughter), and my vintage 1977 Star Wars t-shirt which my daughter can wear, but is going back into storage.
It feels so good to see the bottom of my closet! And now I know that everything hanging up there can be worn.
And I haven't yet mentioned my new dining room table and chairs -- courtesy of my parents for my combined Christmas and birthday present this year. (They made a hefty down payment, and I'm paying off the rest.) They are absolutely gorgeous! I had been using the dining room table and chairs my parents bought when I was in second or third grade: servicable, but hardly elegant. The new table is heavy, with cherry-tone wood that has inlay like an exploding star. The chairs have upholstered seats and the rails in the back go down almost to the floor. I love having grown-up furniture that I chose!
