Where did you graduate from and what year? RA Long High School, 1983
Did you have school pride? On again, off again.
Was your Prom a night to remember? I went to two formal dances during high school, each time with a guy I barely knew (different one each time), and did not particularly enjoy myself.
What was your favorite song you danced to the night of the prom? n/a
Do you own all your Yearbooks? Yes.
Do you remember the first CD you ever bought? We didn't have CD's when I was in high school
What was your favorite movie in high school? The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark
What was your number one choice college? Officially it was Princeton, but actually it was Pomona, where I ended up going.
What radio station did you jam out to in high school? I can't remember.
Were you involved in any organizations or clubs? Debate and band were my big activities. I was also a member of Honor Society, but we didn't actually do anything.
What was your favorite class in high school? English and Lit classes with Mr. LeMonds and Mrs. Loeb. Band -- it wasn't just a class, it was a way of life.
Who was your big crush in High school? I had two intense and complicated romances.
Would you say you have changed a lot since high school? Oh yes. I've been married, given birth, divorced, and am raising a child. My spiritual life has always been important, but it's a form now that my high school self could not have comprehended. I'd like to think I'm more self-aware, and have integrated a lot of the difficult parts of myself that confused and troubled me back in high school. I was very involved in music in high school, and now I only listen, and I do that far more casually than I did in high school. I'm still an introvert, and still tend to be shy (not that anyone who knows me only from LJ would believe it), but I'm more willing to be authentic with people than I was before, to show the parts of myself that I used to hide for fear of being thought "weird."
What do you miss the most about it? Not much. Perhaps only the sense of unlimited possibility, and the excitement of my activities and relationships. Overall I had a very good time in high school, but enough time has passed that there's not really anything I "miss."
Your worst memory of HS? During the last part of senior year I got very scared of life after graduation, but couldn't admit it to myself. I ended up completely neglecting my responsibilities as Band President and section leader, and completely alienated that entire circle of friends. It was messy and ugly, and I felt betrayed by my friends who didn't tell me that I was upsetting them, and by my band director who had not called me to account when I started flaking out -- something he could usually be expected to do.
Did you have a car? I had the use of my family's VW bug.
What were your school colors? Red and black -- which was nice, because those are among my best colors to wear.
Who was your favorite teacher? Mr. LeMonds was an English teacher who had great classes and who helped me start to believe in my ability as a writer.
Did you own a cell phone in high school? No such thing in those days.
Did you leave campus for lunch? Never.
If so, where was your favorite place to go eat? If I didn't sit in the cafeteria, I would hang out in the Library or Band Room.
Were you always late to class? Are you nuts? Never!
Did you ever have to stay for Saturday School? I got 15 minutes of detention once for forgetting my gym clothes three times in a quarter. When the Superintendent's Daughter -- especially one who is usually a model student -- gets detention, everyone knows. *sigh*
Did you ever ditch? I didn't skip a class until I was in college.
When it comes time for the reunion will you be there? I went to my 10-year and had a good time, but skipped the 20th since I was not happy with where I was in my life. I'll probably go to the next one.
