Notes from Life
Jul. 14th, 2004 06:01 amLet's see. . . what's been happening with me?
Saturday: Took my dad out for the outing I promised him for Father's Day. We went to hear Carmina Burana. From row L. Quite an experience! The symphony and chorus were great, and the soloists added a lot by not just singing but acting some of their songs. This was particularly amusing on such pieces as "The Roasting Swan." I hadn't realized that the cycle both started and ended with "O Fortuna." What a treat to hear it twice!
Sunday: Had brunch with my daughter, parents, and
raptures_shadow before she returned to Savannah, then took The Child to see the movie "Two Brothers." It was a nicely-done film, although heart-wrenching in a few places. We were early, and the cineplex was in a "galleria" so we did some browsing, including an actual gallery. We went in, just for fun, and I fell in love with a painting: http://www.progressiveart.com/oleg/invitation_under_moon.htm A "mere" $1,400 for the original, which has brilliant colors and a lot of texture. Unfortunately, I still have medical bills to pay off, so even a three month payment plan isn't going to work for me. I'll have to content myself with a print.
Had a great workout last night. I'm realizing that one of the reasons working with a trainer is so great for me is that it gives me an audience to impress. Last night Adam told me a couple of times he was impressed by my "intensity": I keep pushing, even when it hurts. (Not the bad/injury pain, but the God-I'm-too-tired-to-want-to-do-this-anymore.) When I exercise alone, it's easier to slack off. A trainer also gives me someone to talk to (when I have the breath for it) and make jokes with. Endorphins counteract some of the pain/fatigue and help me keep going longer/stronger.
There's "the royal we" and then there's the "trainer's we." The trainer says things like "now we are going to do lunges," and then stands there, smiling, while I do all the work.
Oh: almost forgot one of the most significant updates: the Ex is driving his SO back to her old place this week to pack her up and move her in permanently upstairs. Her daughters will be joining the household in August, when they finish their annual summer sojourn with their grandfather. I am cautiously optimistic. She seems to have a good influence on him: his mood is better, he eats better, his house is cleaner, and she provides public displays of affection (what's done in private isn't my concern, although he has said that's good too). The goddaughter and her son will be remaining upstairs until August 19th. I'll be sorry to see her go - and I imagine the Ex will too, but there's not enough room for her and the SO's twins (who are my daughter's age).
I'm feeling a bit like I'm part of a post-modern Brady Bunch! Having siblings around will be good for my daughter: both as company/playmates and as a bit of balance to her superstar status. She's going to have to learn more about cooperation and sharing at home -- although she seems to do very well with that other places. My part of the house isn't part of the arrangement between the Ex and SO, so the twins won't be able to roam down here at will. My daughter can invite them down, but this will remain a space which she shares exclusively with me as an Only Child.
It's only mid-July, but I'm already looking forward to buying my fall textbooks and getting back to school!
Off to work now. Have a great day, everyone!
