Don't have time to say much but this reminds me a little of what Borg was saying about the constant danger of "conventional wisdom"; and quite a lot about what Alasdair MacIntyre (in After Virtue) says about the nature of "traditions" and the inevitable tensions of belonging to a tradition (will all the positive legacy and valuable discipline that entails) but having a commitment to truth, reason, justice etc.
