Weekend Update
Oct. 11th, 2004 05:42 amSlept in on Saturday, spent some time with the Child, then was off to D's house for a gaming weekend. The three of us played Castle Falkenstein, which has become one of our favorites this past year. We didn't finish, due in large part to the fact that J was running a sorcerous character, and this was the first time we had used the magic rules in this game, so there was a certain amount of time spent working with the books. But the plotline was intriguing, the characters worked well together, and we had a good time, so we counted the weekend a success.
Unfortunately, we didn't finish the scenario, so we will do that next time. I have volunteered to run a mini-scenario after we conclude this one, and will be doing rifts -- not the actual game of that name, but a session which takes characters from different gameworlds and drops them together. I'm not sure quite why it is, but this type of scenario is endlessly fascinating to me, and my large-scale campaign which took one character each from our Star Wars, GURPS Supers, and D&D campaigns, plus a character generated for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game (which I have never played) turned out very well. This time, I will be pairing a Castle Falkenstein philosophy student mage with a Swashbuckling Adventures Castillan swordsman (who was created and run using CF rules) -- and that should be a good match. I may throw in my Star Wars princess just for fun, since I haven't been able to play her in a couple of years.
We spent Saturday night at D's house, went to Denny's for breakfast, I hung out with D for a while longer, then had a fruitless visit to both Pier One and Bed Bath & Beyond looking for a a table for my newly-painted studio and a carpet runner to go under my treadmill. I returned home, took a nap (we had been up until past 2am), then went out again, and this time found not only a carpet strip but the perfect table. It's not a spare, metal and white plastic piece I had been thinking about, but an antiqued white wood long desk with a glass inset for photos and a narrow drawer beneath. I also bought a small matching file box on wheels. Both are still in their boxes to assemble, but they are here. The carpet strip turned out to be not quite wide enough for the treadmill, so now it's in my long entryway, and the treadmill is set up again in the studio.
After the shopping trip, I worked with the Child on her homework and was pleased to see how much better her spelling and writing is becoming. I did some writing while she took her shower, put her to bed, did some more writing, and went to bed myself.
All in all, it was a satisfying weekend. I have class tonight, which I'm looking forward to, but won't be able to get my desk assembled until Tuesday. I've found that taking more control of my house is an excellent way to raise my own morale.
One of these days I hope to post something of actual substance again, but a lot of what I'm thinking about these days is very personal, and not necessarily LJ material -- at least not beyond a somewhat narrow filter.
