First and most importantly: Dad's surgery went very well today, and he is doing well physically, mentally and emotionally. I was at the hospital from about 8:30am to 8:30pm, and a lot of it was actually very pleasant. I had longer, more in-depth conversations with both my parents than our busy lives have allowed recently.

My family has had two seminary classes, my sister's prayer circle at her workplace, a couple of church congregations, two circles of LiveJournal friends and various other family and friends praying for us and/or sending positive thoughts, white light, good vibes, and etc. -- and I really believe it made a difference. Mom commented that she has felt a real sense of support on an intuitive kind of level.

I was prepared to spend the night in Dad's room if either he or Mom needed me, but it was very clear that my presence was not necessary. We had the chance to get caught up about the various issues I've been discussing here on LJ but haven't had the chance to with him.

One of the pastors from my parents' church was there from 7:15am until 3:00pm, and I had a good time talking with him. His primary ministry is as executive director(?) of an organizaton called Companis, which places professional people as volunteers with non-profit agencies. They require their volunteers to have spiritual directors, and after a couple of hours of conversation he asked me if I would agree to act as a director for one of their volunteers.

I just about fell off my chair. I was - of course - flattered and honored, but my first thought was "I'm not qualified!" He insisted that he had a strong sense that I would be perfect for a couple of his volunteers. I told him I would need to pray about it -- about discerning my ability to act effectively in the role, and my ability to take on the responsibility -- although it would involve only one 60-90 minute meeting per month, not a day-in and day-out relationship of support.

So now I'm home for the evening, The Child is upstairs making pineapple upsidedown cake with the step-goddaughter and her son. I'm going to catch up on my correspondence and head for bed.

Thank you to everyone who has held my family in your hearts and minds today.
