New Year's Resolution: Tarot Class

Thanks to those who responded positively to my comments about creating a tarot class that focuses on helping a person connect with a specific deck.

Since Samhain is considered by many Pagans to be New Year, I'll take today as an opportunity to create a New Year's Resolution to have a class complete by the end of the calendar year.

However, instead of going it alone, I'd like to invite folks to come along for the ride and be my beta testers.

Here's what I'm thinking of:

- I'll create lessons & exercises and post them here under a special filter.

- Beta testers will do the lessons and post both their lesson response and comments and feedback about the materials. (If something feels too personal to share from your results, you don't have to post it, of course.)

- It would be great if people who are brand new to tarot participated, but old hands are welcome as well.

- Beta testers will need to have one tarot deck in their possession to work with, and will need to stick with one deck throughout the processs. If you don't have a deck and aren't sure how to select one, I'll be happy to provide some tips (which will be part of the class material).

- I reserve the right to limit the size of the beta test group.

- By December 31 (if not sooner) I will have a class I can either teach in person or do as a correspondence course. If all goes as it should, a group of my friends will also be comfortable and happy reading with one specific tarot deck and have a good set of tools which can be applied to any other deck they want to use.

Volunteers can comment below!

I may be interested. What kind of time commitment are you thinking the beta testers would need to make in order to be able to give you good feedback and get comfortable with their deck and the tools?

[identity profile] qos.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Good question. . . I would think that 30-45 minutes per lesson (which would be once a week) or less would be fine. It would all depend on how much time you wanted to put into it.

One of the things I need to discover is how long it takes for someone to do a particular exercise and feel comfortable, since I'm thinking about presenting this as a workshop, and I'll need to be able to figure out how much time to allow.

Some of the valid bits of feedback will be: "This was too much at one time," or "This wasn't enough."

Okay - in that case, this is me volunteering!

I'd like to participate in this! I'm just getting acquainted with the DruidCraft deck through a daily one-card reading, and it's been so interesting I'd like to do more with it.

I would love to participate. I did my first reading for myself, last night, and every single card was reversed.. Some of them seemed to speak to me, but others were speaking greek. I spent a long time looking at the cards... noticing new things... I guess I've had them about seven years, but have never read them for myself before.

I'd like to try, I am a relative novice with the Robin Wood deck, which I know you used to use, and your QoS icon was one of the reasons I friended you.

Oh my. . . this sound so tempting. I've been reading for about 5 years. . . and my reading style is not "bookish" at all, i.e., I don't use reversed cards, I give more consideration to how the card "feels" when I turn it over than what some book says it should mean, etc.

You decide if you want me, and if not, I will watch vicariously on the blog (if that's where you'll be doing it).

i'd like to be on the filter, but can't promise to post, so if you don't mind that, please include me! :>

Feel free to join the community and participate to whatever degree you have the time. Your feedback from a teacher perspective will be especially welcome.

With the way my schedule is turning out this holiday season, I doubt I'll have time to participate, but I want you to know you have my full support. I think this is a terrific idea and I - for one - have never seen a class like this offered. Call me crazy, but I could see this class being one that you teach over and over to new batches of students.

I did want to mention that I've been doing some major fall cleaning, and I've got a lot of tarot decks that I don't use that I would be willing to donate to the cause if you're interested. I believe most, if not all, do come with instructional books (even though I know your class won't focus on that). Let me know if you're interested.

I would hope I could teach it over and over!

Thanks for the offer of making decks available. So far it sounds as if everyone who is interested has a deck, but I'll let you know if someone is in need.

Feel free to join the community, even if you can't participate fully.

I think this is a super idea. I'd love to participate, but given my schedule can't promise to be a regular poster. Is that OK?

I'll volunteer. This really sounds wonderful.

Off Topic

I'm sorry to be off topic ... however, were you going to share your info from the PCon offering of last year?

No, that's fine. I'm waaaay overdue.

What operating system do you have?
My best format is a powerpoint for Vista, but I can save it to an earlier format.

Can you send me your email via LJ message?

I volunteer, but don't promise to be a model student. Consider me your practice slacker :)

I'd like to participate!

Sounds like a great idea to me. Count me in if you can please :-) I have The Runic Tarot, which is a little different to standard Tarot decks, with 24 major cards based on the Nordic Runes and the minor arcana in seasons, 13 in each. Will they be ok, or should I get a more classic style Tarot?

[identity profile] qos.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Since it has majors and four groups of minors, it might well work. I'd love for you to try it, as part of the experiment. Your feedback will be valuable.

[identity profile] silverhawkdruid.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd really like that. :-) It has great imagery, but I don't know it anything like as well as I'd like to, and joining a class like this will be a great way to get better acquainted with the deck, and learn to trust my intuition a little better.
Thankyou for letting me take part in this.
Hugs

Heavens! It's my pleasure! I'm delighted you want to take part!
