The War Hits Home

Like everyone else, I've heard about reservists and inactive duty military being called up to fight in Iraq, since enlistment isn't keeping up with Bush's meat grinder.

This afternoon, it became personal.

This afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] _storyteller_ called to tell me an Air Force colonel had called to notify him he has been returned to active duty status. He was commanded to go home and await further orders.

That's all that he's been told right now, but the expectation is that he will be ordered to report to our local Air Force base for processing within the next day or so, and that he will soon be shipped out.

I'm caught in a kind of disbelief. I'm finding it hard to imagine this could actually happen, that in a week or two he could be who-knows-where (probably Iraq, but of course it's not the only place we have a military presence) and compelled to stay there and serve indefinitely.

There's a lot more chasing around my head right now, but there's no way I could put it down coherently.

*flabbergasted*

Holy cow. *clutches you*

I'm a bit speechless, except to wonder what else 2007 can do to you. *hugs*

I've been trying not to take any of what's happened personally. I'm not the one who died. I'm not the one who is being forced into active duty and sent to a war zone.

But yes, since you mention it, I agree that it's been a bit much and I'd like it to stop now, please.

What a nightmare. I'm so sorry.

I'll keep you and your friend in my prayers.

Oh no. Prayers from me, too.

Ack. I know what it's like to be worrying about friends and loved ones in harm's way. May he come home swiftly and safely.

I've read the call up notice and it's so bloody rude. Even if I was happy to be drafted I think the tone of that thing would piss me off. "We own your ass and you'll do exactly what we say."

Fascists!

Yikes. I don't know anything about how the AF reservists are being deployed, but off the top of my head I'd imagine that it would be comparatively safe duty. We can hope so, anyway.

[identity profile] qos.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
He was in Iraq during his first tour of duty in the active duty Air Force, so I'm pretty sure there's a good chance of them sending him back.

[identity profile] nixnivis.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes! I'll keep you both in my prayers.

Holy f***. I knew they could recall personnel up to two years after active service. It was two years to the day after my first husband left the AF that we got married. I didn't realize Storyteller had been active at all.

My prayer list gets longer... the longer this war goes on.

The Air Force doesn't have a huge presence in Iraq, so hopefully he'll be sent somewhere a bit safer.

I won't fill your comments area with the cursing I am doing in my head. Just know I am doing it.

Whatever he does, may luck be with him.
