Tarot Reading

I had to share just the first three cards of the reading [livejournal.com profile] bookchick did with me yesterday. It's my "birthday reading" -- just a few months overdue. I didn't have a specific question -- and I usually don't for a birthday reading -- it's just to get a sense of the overall shape of my life right now.

Even those of you who don't work with tarot might find this interesting. At least the first couple of cards.

This is the Robin Wood deck, the deck from which my default icon is taken.
And the images came out much larger than I expected. .

The center card is the Significator. Some people choose their significator ahead of time. I don't. And this card never comes up for me. But how apt it was. Is. The young man is so focused on the three empty cups in front of him, moping, angry or depressed, that he can't see the glorious cup right next to him. It's not like I haven't spent far too much time concentrating on all the things I don't have, the reasons why my spiritual direction practice wouldn't work, or I'm not ready, for the past year or more. Nope. Not me! *sigh*

The card to the left is the "environment" card, the general atmosphere in my life right now.
It doesn't mean I'm dying. It means that a deep and irreversible change is taking place. As Debbie Ford observes in her book "The Best Year of Your Life" you have to allow the person you've been to die in order to become who you want to be. I love this Death card because it shows a path no longer available, while affirming transformation with the butterfly and spiritual growth with the white rose.

The card on the right is the challenge, traditionally presented as "what crosses you". This is the Six of Swords, inverted. This is a favorite card of mine because of the journeying motif: on a quest or other search, guided by spirit. Both [livejournal.com profile] bookchick and I felt that it was about my struggle to take my inner spiritual journey and manifest it in the outside world, and feeling blocked.

The rest of the reading reinforced the first three cards:

4. Passing Away, was 8 of Wands, inverted. The card shows wands shooting through space. Inverted, it symbolizes blocked energy. Which is definitely where I've been.

5. Coming into Being: The Fool. Stepping forward without fear -- perhaps naively or recklessly, but joyously, trusting the universe.

6. Foundation: Page of Swords. Imagine the daughter of my QoS icon, a young brunette girl running with an upraised sword. Lots of youthful energy, a desire for new ideas, new intellectual endeavors.

7. Sky: The face I show to the world. Page of Cups.

I'm finally starting to trust my intuition, the flying fish in the cup, ready to start playing with this part of myself. Finally ready to show this part of myself to the world, still not entirely confident in myself.

8. Self Image. Queen of Cups.
Promising. Very promising.

9. Hopes and Fears. 9 Pentacles

This is one of my favorite cards -- which shouldn't surprise those of you who know me. This is the Mistress of Her Domain, solitary and happy. Her gates control who enters her territory, and the hawk symbolizes her ability to fly beyond her safe haven when she wants to. So where do the "fears" come in? All the work required to get myself to this point: the work of fertilizing, disbudding and pruning those roses, of tending the grounds, of doing all the stewardship require to get to this point. Possibly even fear of success.

10. House --- Family, friends and others around me.
Page of Pentacles, inverted.
I've never had this many pages in a reading before. This dark-haired little girl holding a pentacle immediately made me think of my daughter, whose welfare I sometimes use as an excuse for not pursuing my dreams. I can't do that -- it would take me away from her too much. Now, my presence for her is an important consideration. But sometimes I make it an excuse.

11. Outcome -- Eight of Pentacles

Another child. This one hard at work doing the basic, repetitive work that will eventually make him master of his craft. I've always just considered this a card of "practice makes perfect" -- but [livejournal.com profile] bookchick pointed out that he put his pentacles up on display. He didn't worry that they somehow were not good enough. We both agree that they're for sale. At this point in my life, it's about trusting the skill I already have, being willing to put it out there while still acknowledging that there is lots of room for growth and developing expertise ahead of me.

It wasn't particularly earth-shattering. None of this was new, but it was a striking confirmation of what I'm doing right now. If anyone has alternate interpretations, I'd be interested in hearing them.

Seems to me you've nailed it. In any case, what resonates with you is the more important consideration, overriding any standard interpretation. (I heard a women speaking at a convention once, and she said that the Moon always represents grave physical illness or death. WTF?)

t's not like I haven't spent far too much time concentrating on all the things I don't have, the reasons why my spiritual direction practice wouldn't work, or I'm not ready, for the past year or more. Nope. Not me!

Were you talking about me? *chortle* Why do we make excuses for why we can't do the things we know we want to do?

Sigh.
