Artist's Way?

Has anyone on my f-list actually worked with Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way book -- or any of her other books?

I've looked at them again and again over the years, but never got into them -- but then, when I was looking at them I wasn't having any challenges to my own creativity.

Just curious about what peoples' experiences have been with her material.

I am slowly reading the book, though I am not doing the exercises. I've enjoyed what I read, but like erynn999, I am not liking her insistence on doing it her way. I figure I'll get out of it exactly what I need to get out of it doing it my way.

Perhaps you can borrow it from the library and give it a once-over, to see what you think.

I diligently worked through the first half of Artist's Way ages ago, and decided it didn't fit what I wanted at the time. One thing I will say for it, though, is that the method really makes you look at what you're being creatively blocked. In itself very useful.

I've always had trouble following directions from faceless authors. I don't even follow recipes "as written."

We may have an extra copy we could loan you to look it over. I'll look in our library tonight.

I dabbled with TAW for a bit. I liked the concept of morning pages, but that much freehand writing in the morning made my hand go numb (it's a nerve issue thingy). I liked some of her ideas, but not necessarily her suggested implementation. (An "artists date" is great, but spending the extra money isn't necessarily...)

I strongly recommend that you check out "How to Avoid Making Art", which is available from the king county library, before you pick up "The Artist's Way."

It's written like a children's book, is funny and insightful, and can give you a different perspective on the author.
