My parents returned the puppy today.

She had become increasingly "manic" and doing a lot of biting. Even when offered a chew toy or removed from a limb, she would immediately come back in something like attack mode. My parents just didn't feel like they could handle her in a way that was good for them or her.

It's too bad.

I've recommended that when they're ready to try again they look for a mature and gentle shelter dog who is already housebroken. But they probably won't venture in this area again for at least a year.

Yikes. That's a sad situation. Here's hoping that the puppy ends up somewhere safe, and that your parents will be willing to try again sooner rather than later. They should get a Riley -- he's more likely to do my nails than he is to bite :)
